影片设定在1969-1974年，电影明星马龙·白兰度在大溪地买了一个不宜居的小小岛屿，希望逃离忙碌的影星生活，向世界展示如何获得持续性。为此，白兰度说服籍籍无名但满怀理想主义的洛杉矶建筑师Bernard Judge，请他走出稳定的生活，一起来到小岛，努力把那里建设成为世界上第一个真正的可持续生态度村。
